What’s Better Than Facebook?

Facebook has revolutionized birthdays. In fact, there are not many things better than getting hundreds of Happy Birthday messages from people near and far- from your best friends to your “friends” that you haven’t seen in 20 years.

Personally, I’m trying to step up my game with each Facebook birthday reminder because as much as I like the blanket HB2U, a Paperless Post card would be a little better.

What is better than Facebook and better than Paperless Post? Good old fashion snail mail. Who doesn’t like getting a letter with their address written in ink and not peeking through a glassine window demanding some form of payment?!

And even better than all of the above?! A care package.

For heavens sake, I’m not saying these ideas are for the people that you knew when you wore braces and haven’t seen since- the standard Facebook will do just fine for them.

Send that little package of joy and love to someone you really care about. You will absolutely make their day and an added bonus- it will make your day too!

Make a Plan!

When I set out to throw a party I have to start with a plan. The plan really depends on what kind of event it is and how much is involved. A kid’s party can require a lot of thinking and prep work while a dinner party with friends is generally a lot less complicated. Regardless of the party, I still think it helps to put your ideas and punch list down on paper.

I’m hosting a little birthday party for a friend this weekend. Lucky for me it’s going to be a potluck, so I won’t be spending all day cooking for 10.

Here is what I’ve got for Sunday…

DIY Gift Wrap

I am kind of obsessed with pretty packages. My dream home has a little office to be used solely for wrapping presents. There are so many great wrapping papers and beautiful ribbon, but sometimes a girl needs to be frugal. As I look at the calendar and all the upcoming birthday parties, I think we are going to be getting crafty with the wrapping around here.

Olympic Games 2013

I think there were a few moms giving me the stink-eye when they arrived at this party. Rest assured, fellow parents, this party took the better part of a month to plan, organize, and execute. It involved driving to multiple Targets looking for the right sizes of white t-shirts, carefully planning the movement of the teams around the activities only to throw the plan to the wind once it started and soccer took 5x as long as all the other sports, figuring out how to structure the awards so everyone got medals, but the individual winners also got acknowledged, building things, crafting galore, and of course watching the weather predictions for 10 days straight!

It was a little like child birth. Totally scary, super exciting, and slightly exhausting. My son is already asking for Olympics 2014, so hopefully in 11 months all that I will remember are these sweet moments.

Events: Long Jump, Gymnastics (seat jumps/min), Basketball Around the World and Knock-out, Soccer Around the World

Good Sportsmanship and Team Spirit were acknowledged with trophies

Happy 8th Birthday!

I tucked my son in last night telling him the story of what I was doing at that time 8 years ago. Calling my mom to have her get on a plane, calling the doctor and hoping he would tell me it was time to go to the hospital, quietly cursing the lamaze instructor, etc.

Then he woke up to this…

A little visual reminder of all of his past birthdays.

And donuts in the shape of an 8.

And 8 balloons.
